MM Ranch and Paton Bros. is a family operation run by Melvin and Donalee Paton along with their sons and their families; Clinton Paton and children Kristie, Taylor and Barrett; and Curtis and Cathy Paton and children Ty, Connor, Kaden and Carly. Clinton and Curt are the fourth generation of Paton Bros. to work this century farm established in 1902.
The Ranch consists of approx 10,000 owned and leased acres of crop, pasture, and hay land. Crop production includes oats, wheat, flax and barley. The Patons take pride in the ability to grow all of their own feed, which ensures its quality. Just recently, an Environmental farm plan was completed to ensure the future of the land. The cattle herd consists of 500 commercial beef cows, most of which are Charolais, Simmental and Limousin. All of the cattle are age verified, and follow a strict vaccination program set out by a veterinarian. MM Ranch has been breeding registered Belgians since 1967. The herd consists of 150 registered Belgian mares, 15 stallions, broke geldings, hitch prospects, and replacement stock. Both the cattle and horses are worked from horseback, so there are a few good saddle horses around as well. The stock is fed in the winter using a chore team. The horses are cared for in adherence to a strict code of practice, which covers all vaccinations, hoof care and housing. As well as monthly inspections, an independent review is conducted by a veterinarian twice a year. Most of the horses produced at MM Ranch are sold as weanlings. The Paton family takes great pleasure in seeing their horses do well for others, having sold geldings to some top hitches in Canada and the USA. As well, they have sold breeding stock overseas, and take pride in having some of the stallions they have produced, standing at some of top breeding farms in North America. They also sell broke teams and singles, as well as saddle horses. The last 40 years have seen the Ranch constantly trying to improve, by producing and keeping good replacement mares, and purchasing conformationally correct stallions with excellent pedigrees. The majority of the people who buy are repeat customers. Canada/US border crossing paperwork and transportation can be arranged and assisted with whenever possible. All of the foals are eligible for the NAERIC Advantage program. For further details go to www.naeric.org. Most of the horses that are sold, are done so by private treaty, but MM Ranch does consign to the Keystone Select Draft Foal Sale and Futurity, Meadville, PA.; North Country Breeders Draft Horse Sale, Brandon, MB; and the NAERIC Draft Horse Classic Sale and Futurity in conjunction with the Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, SK.
